Colorado Proposes Law to Ban Additives in Marijuana Vape Products

With a string of illnesses and vaping related deaths in the last few months, the public has been turning a harsh eye towards all vaping products, including marijuana products. Several vaping related illnesses have been seen in Colorado, and nearly all of the patients were using a combination of tobacco and marijuana products. The source of the illness is still unknown, but many have pointed towards black market vaping products.

In an effort to quell some of the destruction of vaping related illnesses, particularly in teens and young adults, many cities have taken it upon themselves to remove flavored vaping products that many teenagers use. Boulder County has taken part in this removal as well.

In a hearing on Tuesday, Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division discussed the guidelines that would be put in place if the law is passed. The law would prohibit Polyethylene glycol (PEG), Vitamin E acetate, and Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT oil) in cannabis concentrates or vaping products.

Manufacturers of concentrates and vape products will also have to provide a listing of additives on the product label as well as language that states “Not approved by the FDA.”

This is expected to be passed within the month, and compliance with the law will likely begin on January 1st of next year.
