Ignite Adaptive Sports is a volunteer-run organization that gives disabled persons the ability to participate in winter sports. The company offers lessons in alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ski biking, and snowshoeing. The company, which started in 1975, now has over 200 volunteers and over 300 students. This includes wounded active duty and military veterans served through a US Paralympic Military Program Ignite developed in 2009, in collaboration with the U.S. Olympic Committee.

One volunteer, Bill Goldstein, works as the events coordinator for Ignite, notably rallying together everything that needs to be done for the Ignite Tonight Gala, a yearly event to raise money that fills up quickly. Bill first began his journey with Ignite as a student after he lost his leg, and as the program changed his life, he too wanted to volunteer to help others. You can hear more of Bill’s story below.

As an extension of his work with Ignite, Bill has recently begun a radio show called The Shift where he interviews people with disabilities that he has met over the years and gives them an outlet to share their stories and how they overcame them to have a better life. Bill says that he started this show as a way to make the disabled community visible again. The Shift will be featured on AboutBoulder as part of our ongoing efforts to bring local voices to life. You can listen to the first episode of The Shift here.

If you are interested in helping with Ignite’s cause, please consider attending their annual gala.
